OET (Occupational English Test)

OET Thumbnail

OET Stands for Occupational English Test which is the English language test for Healthcare professionals.

It assesses the language communication skills of healthcare professionals who wish to register and practice in an English-speaking environment.

OET is recognized by regulatory healthcare boards and councils in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Dubai, Singapore, Namibia and Ukraine.

Many organizations, including hospitals, universities and colleges, are using OET as proof of a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively in a demanding healthcare environment.

Healthcare professionals choose OET because it helps them prove they have the right level of English for work or study, while also learning the kind of language they will need every day at work.

Healthcare organizations and regulators choose OET because it helps them to select healthcare professionals with the right level of English proficiency to deliver safe and high quality care.

OET provides a valid and reliable assessment of all four language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking – with an emphasis on communication in medical and health professional settings.

OET Exams

Listening:
Follow and understand a range of healthcare-related spoken materials such as patient consultations and lectures.

Reading:
Read and understand different types of text on healthcare-related subjects

Writing:
Write a letter, often a referral letter, based on a typical healthcare workplace situation.

Speaking:
Participate in two role-plays based on typical healthcare workplace situations. You take your professional role while the interlocutor plays a patient or client.

OET exams occur 14 times in a year with at least one test date every month.

Results are published online approximately 16 business days after the test. Official statements of results are sent out in the post following the release of online results. There is no overall grade – candidates receive separate grades for each sub-test.

Most recognized organizations require candidates to have at least a B grade in each of the four sub-tests and recognize results as valid for up to two years.

They also require that candidates achieve the requisite grades for each sub-test in one sitting. However, the result requirements must be confirmed from the concerned body in which the candidate is trying to apply.
